Reviews for Blithe Spirit at The Duke of York's, London
March 12, 2020
Reviews are out for Noël Coward's classic comedy, Blithe Spirit at the Duke of York's in London. The ever-popular Jennifer Saunders reprises her starring role as the ludicrous clairvoyant Madame Arcati. Saunders is joined on stage by Geoffrey Streatfeild as Charles, Lisa Dillon as Ruth Condomine, Emma Naomi as Elvira, Simon Coates as Dr Bradman, Lucy Robinson as Mrs Bradman, and Rose Wardlaw as Edith.
The production is directed by former National Theatre director Sir Richard Eyre with design by Anthony Ward, lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by John Leonard and illusions by Paul Kieve. Below is a synopsis of a selection of these reviews:
★★★★★ - The Independent, Paul Taylor
"In this inspired revival of Noel Coward’s comedy, Jennifer Saunders socks us with a hysterically funny performance as Madame Arcati, the psychic invited round to supper for what she thinks are convivial, neighbourly reasons."
★★★★ - The Times, Clive Davis
"Here Jennifer Saunders is a winning combination of eccentricity and bossiness. It’s a profoundly physical, almost clownish performance. "
★★★★ - The Telegraph, Clare Allfree
"She [ Jennifer Saunders] is simply magnificent as the eccentric medium Madame Arcati who exposes all manner of marital skeletons when she inadvertently summons Elvira, the dead first wife of novelist Charles Condomine, during a séance."
★★★★- The Sun, Chloe Kerr
"Jennifer Saunders lights up the stage with her hysterical performance in Blithe Spirit - which she has reprised after a production in Bath last year."
